Production of graphitic carbon filaments, in which filaments of a suitable organic compound, e.g. cellulose, polyester, polyamide and esp. polyacrylonitrile are heated at 100-300 deg.C, partic. 200-300 deg.C, in a suitable atmosphere selected from inert gases, air, oxygen enriched air, oxides of nitrogen or ozone, and thereafter carbonised in an inert atmosphere first at a temp. of not less than 1,000 deg.C and finally graphitised at a temp. of not less than 2,000 deg.C and pref. not less than 2,500 deg.C. Pref. the carbonisation and graphitisation is carried out using standard inert gas arc welding equipment, the preferred inert gas being argon, hydrogen or helium, moving this along the length of a tow of filaments surrounded by an inert gas, at a suitable speed. The use of inert gas shielded arc welding equipment is an advance in the process for fibre carbonising and graphitisation. The carbon filaments are useful as reinforcing agents for plastics materials.
|
