The invention provides a method for manufacturing an optical information carrier, in particular for producing a master disc by recording information comprising information units in the form of a pattern of geometrical structures in a stack of at least a recording layer (2) formed on a surface of a substrate (1). The recording layer comprises a phase-change material, in particular GeInSbTe. In the method of the invention, the recording layer is exposed to a laser beam to form an exposure pattern in the recording layer and the exposed layer is developed for creating the pattern in the recording layer corresponding to the exposure pattern.
