A measuring device (1) measures the distance (R) from the side of the vehicle (1) to a nearby object e.g. a curb (5), as well as the angle (alpha ) of the distance with respect to a horizontal plane (HSR). The plane passes through the measuring device location. A parking space detector determines the length and width of the parking space with respect to the nearby objects based on the measured distance and angle as well as vehicle speed.
