Compressed air is supplied to the internal space of a pressure roller (130) having air outlet openings along its length and cylindrical periphery. A complementary surface (124) around which the paper stack (104) lies has an axis of symmetry which is parallel to the surface (102) on which the paper rests. An independent claim is included for a method of loosening a stack of paper.
