Oligomers with terminal sulphonate groups, or their salts, are prepared by polymerising one or more alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated monomers in aqueous emulsion in the presence of a water-soluble bisulphate compound which acts as initiator of a reductive polymerisation, and then, if wished, neutralising the acid groups present. The oligomers are used as conducting media, especially in the conducting barrier layer on a photoelectrostatic copying paper or other photoelectrostatic registering device. Certain of the oligomers can also be used in after-shave lotions, as antistatics for floorings and as gelling agents for metal ions.
