In relation to routers used in a communications network, it is known to employ either means external to a given router or integrated with the router to monitor flows of traffic. However, such measures are either incorrectly placed to monitor a network problem, or require a, desirably avoidable, level of processing overhead within line cards of routers. The present invention overcomes these problems by making use of a multicast facility of a router (100) to mark received packets (201), in accordance with a predetermined sampling rate, for forwarding to a central processing resource (102) that is arranged to perform measurements in relation to sampled packets. |
