In an automotive vehicle limited-slip bevel differential gear, wherein differential rotation of the usual half-shafts S is resisted by cone friction clutches F between side wheels 27 and the usual input casing C, the cone friction clutches F are engaged by plate-spring packs P, the engaging force of which is decreased by the opposing interaction thrust of the bevel gear teeth reaction in proportion to increasing input torque whereby the clutches F are engaged with a force varying inversely proportional to the input torque, such that each clutch is lightly engaged during normal torque transmission, i.e. when the force of the spring packs P is relieved by the opposing bevel gear thrust, but one or other clutch F becomes fully engaged by its spring pack P whenever the output torque on the associated one or other output shaft S, and hence also the opposing bevel gear thrust that side, vanishes, viz. when one wheel loses traction. As shown, the spring-loaded conical clutch members 35 are splined at 41 to the output shafts S and engage conical surfaces 54 on removable cylindrical inserts 53 (Fig. 3) which are notched and recessed at 70, 72 to locate on the planet cross-pins 31 and form seats for the bevel planets 29. In Fig. 4 (not shown), the side gear-wheels (27a) are splined at (51) on extended bosses of the conical clutch members (35a) which, as previously, are directly splined at (50) to the output shafts S.
