Described is a process for treating and recycling drilling muds comprising a mixture of diesel, water, baryta and cuttings. The process is characterized in that it includes the following stages: a) screening the diesel, water, baryta and cuttings mixture in a mesh; b) settling the mixture originated from the stage (a) in a settler and obtaining i) a diesel-rich liquid oleaginous phase, and ii) a baryta, water and cuttings-rich solid phase having diesel traces; c) homogenizing the solid phase obtained from the settling stage (b) in a container by adding water and steam; d) centrifuging the homogenized mixture obtained from the stage (c) and obtaining i) a baryta and water-rich stream, and ii) a cutting-rich stream; e) centrifuging the baryta and water-rich stream obtained from the stage (d) and obtaining i) a baryta-rich stream and ii) a water-rich stream; f) treating the water-rich current originated from the stage (e) in a treating unit for separating diesel from said stream and obta ining treated water; g) homogenizing the cutting-reach stream generated from the stage (d) in a container by adding water; and h) settling and washing the cutting-rich homogenized mixture originated from the stage (g) in a silo, and obtaining a substantially harmless cutting. The method of the present invention is useful for obtaining harmless currents separated from diesel, baryta, cuttings and water.
