PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a hair treatment composition which has good extendability on hair and good finger passability, when hair is rinsed, and gives excellent conditioning effects such as freshness, flexibility and dry touch, after used. SOLUTION: This hair treatment composition comprising an anionic surfactant and/or an ionic surfactant, a water-swelling clay mineral, a polyhydric alcohol, an oil and water is characterized by containing the water-swelling clay mineral in an amount of 1 to 10 wt.% based on the total amount of the hair treatment composition and containing the surfactants in an amount of 0.5 to 10 wt.% based on the total amount of the hair treatment composition.
