Method wherein a membrane is first excited to transmit the waves, then damped and then caused to vibrate by the returning reflected waves. To damp the excitation of the membrane, the membrane vibrations are measured and then the membrane is vibrated in a phase-displaced manner to cancel out the initial excitation vibrations. Measurement of membrane vibrations and creation of damping membrane excitation are carried out sequentially, i.e. in a time-displaced manner. The invention also relates to a corresponding control device for an ultrasonic transducer and use of the inventive transducer in a motor vehicle parking system.
