[Also in Division C3] Thermal stabilizers for resins comprise organotin compounds of the formula where R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are the same or different hydrocarbyl radicals linked to Sn by C-Sn bond and are preferably an alkyl group containing 1-12 C atoms, X and Y are the same or different -S-(CH 2 ) n -COO- radicals, and are the mercapto acyl radicals of mercapto acid esters of polyols n being 1 or 2, and Z is oxygen or sulphur. The polyol may be a partially esterified aliphatic acid. The preferred polyols include glycol, trimethylol ethane or propane, pentaerythritol, glycerol mannitol and sorbitol or the partial esters of stearic, lauric and acetic acids. The preferred mercapto acids are thioglycolic and 3 - mercaptopropionic acids. The compounds are preferably made by the reaction of dealkyl tin oxide or sulphide with mercapto acid ester of a polyol. The compounds are used as thermal stabilizers for resins, in particular polyvinyl chloride (see Division C3). |
