The invention comprises acetylenic ketones of formula: R-CO-(CC)n-R1, wherein R is an alkyl, aralkyl, or cycloalkyl radical or an aromatic or heterocyclic residue, either substituted or unsubstituted; n is 3, 4 or 5 and R1 is an H or halogen atom or an alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl or acyl substituent or an aromatic or heterocyclic residue, either substituted or unsubstituted. They are prepared by oxidation of the corresponding alcohols: RCHOH-(CC)n-R1 with an oxidizing agent which will oxidize an -OH group to a >C=O group but will not attack a triple bond, e.g. chromic anhydride or active MnO2. The alcohol starting materials may be prepared by (i) reaction of R-CHO with (alkali metal)-(CC)n-R1 followed by hydrolysis; (ii) reaction in a solvent of RCHO with a Grignard reagent of formula: halogen-Mg-(CC)n-R1/h followed by hydrolysis or (iii) Cadiot-Chodkiewicz reaction of Br-(CC)y-R1 with R-CHOH-(CC)x-H where x + y = n.ALSO:Parasiticidal and fungicidal compositions comprise a compound of formula: R-CO-(CC)n-R1 wherein R and R1 are alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, aromatic or heterocyclic substituents which may be substituted and wherein R1 may also be a hydrogen, halogen or acyl substituent, n is 3-5, in admixture with an inert solvent or carrier. The compositions may be in the form of pastes, pomades, powders, water-dispersible solids, water-miscible liquids or solutions in aqueous or non-aqueous solvents, and acetone, benzene, chlorobenzene, chloroform, talc, sand, and kaolin are specified solvents and carriers. |
