PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel cord for reinforcement of rubber article excellent in rubber penetrability and cut-separation resistance and resistance to cord folding accompanying by buckling deformation in rubber articles, and to provide a pneumatic tire using the same. SOLUTION: The invention relates to the steel cord for reinforcement of rubber article comprising a core filament obtained by winding 5-8 sheath filaments on the core filament with core crimped (wavy forming), wherein an opening rate of the cross cut of the cord (major axis of circumscribed ellipsoid/major axis of inscribed ellipsoid=Ro) is regulated to be in the range of 2.1-2.8.
