An MEA-gasket assembly (1) comprising an MEA (5) including a polymer electrolyte membrane (5A), a catalyst layer and a gas diffusion layer (5C), a plate-like frame (6), which is so bonded to the polymer electrolyte membrane (5A) at the circumferential edge of the MEA (5) as to surround the MEA (5) and provided with a plurality of fluid manifold holes (12, 13, 14), and annular gaskets (7) formed on the opposite sides of the frame (6) wherein an annular clearance formed between the inner edge of the annular gasket (7) and the outer edge of the gas diffusion layer (5C) is closed at least partially.
