<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device in which the asymmetry of light leakage in black display is reduced. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal layer 103 has splay aligned liquid crystal molecules 112. An optical compensating layer 118 has prescribed optical characteristics and reduces the light leakage in the black display. When a direction of a long axis direction of the liquid crystal molecule 112 projected onto a substrate surface is defined as the x-direction, a direction normal to the x-direction in the substrate surface is defined as the y-direction, and a direction vertical to the substrate is defined as the z-direction, the fast axis of the optical compensating layer 118 is oriented to the y-direction. When counterclockwise rotation in the xz-plane seen from a positive y-direction is defined as rotation toward a positive direction, the slow axis of the optical compensating layer 118 is oriented to a direction corresponding to rotation from the x-direction by θ1 toward the positive direction. Also, an optical elastic axis in the thickness direction is oriented to a direction corresponding to rotation from the z-direction by θ1 toward the positive direction. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
