<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a temperature distribution uniform by preventing the drop in temperature of the fixing member when a plurality of recording materials consecutively pass through a fixing device and preventing the overheating of the end portions of the fixing member when a plurality of recording materials each having a small width consecutively pass through the fixing device. <P>SOLUTION: When the recording material P having a small width passes through the nip, the temperature Tc of the center portion of the fixing member 14 in its axial direction is detected and compared with a second reference temperature T2. If it is Tc<T2, a main heating member 1a, or a center portion heater, is turned on. If it is not Tc<T2, the main heating member 1a is turned off. In addition, the temperature Tr of the end portion of the fixing roller 14 is detected and compared with a second reference temperature T2. If it is Tr<T2, the main heating member 1a, as the center portion heater, and a main heating member 1b, as an end portion heater, are turned on.
