PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact traction drive unit capable of efficiently transmitting large torque. SOLUTION: This traction drive type continuously variable transmission is composed of a first input-output shaft 7 rotatably supported to a casing 10; a second input-output shaft 6 rotatably supported to the casing 10; a pair of pulley members 4 supported to the first input-output shaft 7 and formed with V-shaped grooves variable in groove width; a ring 3 engaged with the V-shaped grooves and supported at the outer periphery; and a mechanism for moving the ring 3 around the second input-output shaft 6. Ball screws 12, 18, 22 for converting rotary motion into linear motion are used as means 9 for changing the groove width by moving the pulley members 4 in the axial direction.
