Lasers of neodymium glass or calcium fluoride - with matched refractive index liquids

Laser device comprising small pieces e.g. parallel discs of a solid active material immersed in a liquid of the same refractive index. Specifically Nd glass (refractive index 1.512 at 1.058 mu) is matched with CS2/CCl4 (0.423:0.577) water/Ba bromomercurate, water/K bromomercurate, or CHCl3/CHBr3. CaF2 (refractive 1.4286 at 1.058 mu) may be matched with water/Ba bromomercurate, water/K bromomercurate, bromopentane/pentane or polytrifluorochlorethylene. The device combined the optical homogeneity of a liquid with the high density of centres and freedom from thermal deactivation of a solid.
