<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing carbon nanotubes with mass productivity, little defects and high tensile strength. <P>SOLUTION: The carbon nanotubes 6 are manufactured by a chemical vapor phase growth method by using fine particles 2 of a sulfur compound of nickel as a catalyst and introducing a hydrocarbon gas 5 at high temperature. The catalyst is prepared as fine particles on a substrate 1 by various methods so that carbon nanotubes with high linearity and little defects can be obtained. Or, by another method, carbon nanotabes having better characteristics are obtained by allowing the catalyst prepared as fine particles to float in the introduced gas. A composite reinforced material using the obtained carbon nanotubes shows higher strength than a composite reinforced material using carbon nanotubes obtained by conventional methods. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
