An optical pointer positioning system includes a video camera 4 which captures an image and a pointer device 5 which produces an infra-red beam projected onto the image, the beam being modulated by a signal which is remotely transmitted to it from the operation of the video camera. The signal is applied to the modulated beam such that it is on for one field of a video frame and off for the other. The detected position of the mark is then digitally filtered and used to position a steadied computer generated cursor. The modulated optical beam is also encoded with the status of user operable buttons which once detected and decoded are used to simulate mouse button events. |
