The apparatus has an illuminating device and a camera which are so arranged that light from the illumination device is reflected from the containers or parts of the package and can be received by the camera. The apparatus has a second illumination device such that even the diffuse characteristics of the reflected light can be received unaffected by reflections by the camera (8,9). Independent claims also cover a method of identifying containers etc.
