Dielectric waveguide - for electromagnetic waves at near optical wavelengths

A first dielectric, e.g. a liquid or polymer plastics, is surrounded by a second dielectric esp. glass with a slightly lower refractive index. If the first dielectric is a coloured solvent esp. Rhodamine B in benzyl alcohol the waveguide may be used as a laser when stimulated by pump radiation. The second dielectric may be in the form of a capillary tube or a channel etched in an evaporated spacing layer, e.g. of MnF2 or SiO2 between two polished glass plates. The waveguide can be used at high power.
