PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read an image of encoded information or character information to identify information associated with the read information. SOLUTION: If the telephone number of a caller notified when an incoming call arrives is not stored in a telephone directory data storage unit, a fixed telephone set (not shown) converts the telephone number into a bar code to display the bar code and the telephone number as shown in 13a. A cellular phone device 4 with a camera picks up the displayed bar code, converts the bar code into a telephone number, and searches the telephone directory data storage unit 49 of the cellular phone. If a matched telephone number exists, a display unit 43 displays the name of the caller of the contents of the telephone directory data.
