PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic type position rotation sensing element having high resolution performance, a small size, high reliability, high stability, and excellent mass production. SOLUTION: The magnetic type position rotation sensing element comprises a magnetic medium for recording a magnetic pattern at constant magnetization pitches and opposed to the magnetic medium, and an artificial grating magnetoresistive effect element for detecting the magnetic pattern by mutual movement. The sensing element has length of two or more times of the magnetization pitches in a mutual movement direction in a magnetism sensitive part of the artificial grating magnetoresistive effect element and has a shape changed periodically in the mutual movement direction in the magnetism sensitive part.
