An impact detector for vehicles having at least one sensor 103 which senses a variable which is dependent upon the nature of an impact. The sensor is mounted on or within bumper or fender 100. The bumper incorporates a deformable part 102 with predetermined stiffness and is positioned to be deformed during an impact. The stiffness may vary in accordance with at least one parameter such as the precise point of impact on the bumper or temperature. The detector incorporates an arrangement 104, 105, 106, 110, 111, 112 to measure the parameter. An evaluator 108 evaluates the output of the sensor, in combination with the degree of stiffness corresponding to the measured value of the parameter and generates an output signal to actuate a pedestrian protection device 119. |
