<p>The present invention provides compositions and methods for regulating the alternative complement pathway. The present invention further provides antibodies, and fragments, homologs, and derivatives thereof, for regulating the alternative complement pathway. The present invention provides the monoclonal antibody 3E7 directed against C3b protein as a means of inhibiting activation and progression of the alternative complement pathway. The present invention provides a method of inhibiting activation and progression of the alternative complement pathway by inhibiting the binding of factor H and factor B to C3b fragments.</p>
