PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus wherein the response characteristics of moving image is improved. SOLUTION: The image display apparatus wherein light from a light source is modulated by two light-modulating elements, constituted of liquid crystal panels based on display image data to display an image has first light-modulating elements 50B, 50G and 50R modulating light from the light source, second light-modulating elements 60B, 60G and 60R disposed in series with the first light-modulating elements on an optical path and modulating light emitted from the first light-modulating elements and a driving means 200 for driving the first light modulating means by a normally-white display mode and driving the second light modulating element by a normally-black display mode.
