<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce nonuniform images and drive torque increases, in such a developing device that contact pressure between a developer carrier and a developer restricting member is high and a developer supply member is also disposed in contact with the developer carrier so that the initial drive torque is increased. <P>SOLUTION: Before the initial use of the developing device, in and near the part where the developer carrier 11 and the developer restricting member 13 are in contact with each other and in and near the part where the developer carrier 11 and the developer supply member 12 are in contact with each other, polymer particles serving as lubricant J are present while no developer is present. The polymer particles include particles having (1) an average particle diameter that is five to 10 times as large as the surface roughness Rz of the developer carrier 11 and (2) a particle diameter that is smaller than the surface roughness Rz of the developer carrier 11.
