摘要 <p>1280356 Timing ignition OPTIMIZER CONTROL CORP 26 June 1969 [12 Aug 1968] 32469/69 Heading F1B [Also in Division G3] The optimum setting for a variable which influences the output of a power producing machine is automatically obtained by an arrangement in which the setting is oscillated about a zero position which is adjusted by a fluid-pressure operated device responsive to the power output so as to maximize said output. The invention is applied to a spark ignition I.C. engine 10, the distributor 12 of which is continuously oscillated (about 100 times per minute) by a connection 15. As shown, this is coupled to a hydraulic piston 22 to which fluid-pressure from 19 is applied to opposite sides alternately by an electromagnetic valve 21, which is energized via a slip ring type switch 17b, 17c driven by auxiliary means. The fluid outlet at 32 is controlled by a second electromagnetic valve 30 which opens or restricts either passage 28 or 34 and is controlled by a logic circuit 37 having inputs from a second slip ring switch.17c, 17d and an accelerometer or torque transducer 35 on the output shaft of the engine. The logic circuit determines whether advance or retard of the ignition is associated with acceleration or deceleration and the system stabilizes when both advance and retard produce deceleration. The slip rings 17a, 17b are offset to provide a time delay equal to the response time of the system. The slip rings may be replaced by an electronic generator of square or sine waves. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the inlet, only, to the piston 22 is controlled by an electromagnetic spool valve energized to admit fluid for a greater time on one side than the other, or equally, by selection of either of three rectangular wave trains which have respectively longer positive than negative excursions, or vice versa, or equal periods; the selection is made by a logic circuit which receives signals from the accelerometer and from a magnetic pickup which senses the oscillations of the rod of piston 22. In a further alternative, Fig. 5 (not shown), the system is pneumatic and uses the intake manifold vacuum. The actuator comprises a diaphragm, the pressure on one side of which is controlled by selection of wave trains as in Fig. 4. The system may be disabled if other variables such as engine speed and vacuum are beyond prescribed limits.</p>
