The device comprises a piston mounted inside a cylinder, a spring biased part located inside and movable relative to the piston and a piston displacement means. In a first piston position the pedal is connected to the spring biased part and can be moved by moving the piston and this part towards a second piston position. In between these two positions the pedal can be moved by firstly moving the spring biased part into a second position and secondly moving the piston and this part towards the second piston position. In the second piston position the piston the pedal can be moved by moving the spring biased part towards the second part position. The piston spring has a spring constant which is higher than that for the spring for the spring biased part.
