<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact and adjustable wavelength dispersion compensator. <P>SOLUTION: A method of and apparatus for optical signal dispersion compensation uses tunable optical (ODC) and electronic (EDC) dispersion compensation. The ODC provides significant first-order dispersion compensation, but leaves significant high-order dispersion and transmissivity ripple effects.
