摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve prolongation of lifetime of a fluorescent lamp that emits far-infrared light. SOLUTION: A discharge space 12 of a glass bulb 11 is filled with xenon and neon, at a ratio of 80 to 20 in a total pressure of 10 kPa. On the inner surface of the glass bulb 11, an iron-activated lithium aluminate phosphor (LiAlO<SB>2</SB>; Fe) is provided in addition as a phosphor layer 15 a 3-wavelength phosphors layer. A high-voltage pulse, having a discharge quiescent period, is applied to electrodes 17, 17. Then, an excimer light, composed mainly of a wavelength of 172 nm, i.e., ultraviolet light, is emitted, excites the ultraviolet light exciting the phosphor layer 15, thereby radiating a visible light containing a far-infrared light of not shorter than 700 nm in wavelength, suitable for growing plants. Since mercury is not required, deterioration of the iron-activated lithium aluminate phosphor is prevented and enables radiation of the far-infrared light over a long period.
