PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a door checking device for a vehicle, which allows a door not to be stepwise opened at predetermined selected openings but to be held at an arbitrary position determined by the user. SOLUTION: The door checking device has a lever (5) having one end thereof supported by a vehicle body (1) and a free end thereof extending into the door (2). The lever (5) has coating layers (8) applied to surfaces thereof, and shoes (9) energized by springs (10) are brought into slide contact with the coating layers (8), respectively. Each coating layer (8) has a large coefficient of static friction but a small coefficient of kinetic friction, and therefore the door (2) is smoothly operated by the difference between the coefficients of friction.
