PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lower the operating temperature of a discharge lamp using zinc. SOLUTION: This discharge lamp 1 is equipped with an airtight vessel 11, and a heat insulating means 12 to cover the airtight vessel 11. A proper amount of zinc iodide (Znl<SB>2</SB>) and a noble gas is filled in the discharge space 18 of the airtight vessel 11 as a discharge medium. The noble gas is a gas obtained by mixing neon and argon to generate the Penning effect. A three wavelengths emitting type phosphor layer 20 is provided on the inner surface of an outer tube 22. A high voltage is impressed between discharge generating means 14, 14 forming the electrodes of cold cathodes. Thereby, the zinc iodide discharges at about 300°C, and an ultraviolet ray can be radiated. A zinc halide forming a halide is used. Thereby, a vapor pressure rises, and an operating temperature can be lowered compared with the case in which metal zinc is used as a simple substance. Flexibility as to a material used for the airtight vessel 11 is increased, and a manufacturing cost can be easily reduced. Mercury is not required to be used as the discharge medium, and the discharge lamp having little influence on environments can be provided. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
