<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a user to select a function according to a purpose easily and appropriately, even if a variety of video devices are connected in a video reproducing apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: Menu items of available functions are displayed on a screen in response to a top menu instruction (S4a). When a function is selected (S4b), the connection state of an apparatus for achieving the function is determined (S4c). If the apparatus is not connected, a warning is displayed, and if the apparatus is not connected, the menu items of a next page are displayed (S4e). In detecting a page operation (S4f), if the page operation indicates a next page, the presence of the next page (S4g) is determined, and if the next page exists, the menu items of the next page is displayed (S4h), and the process turns to the processing of S4f. If the page operation designates a former page, the presence of the former page is determined(S4i), and if the former page exists, the menu items of the former page are displayed (S4j), and the process returns to the processing of S4f.
