PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition, which satisfies a plural number of following characteristics: a high maximum temperature of the nematic phase, a low minimum temperature of the nematic phase, a low viscosity, suitable optical anisotropy, a low threshold voltage and a large specific resistance. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition contains: the 1st component selected at least one from the group consisting of compounds represented by formula (1), the 2nd component selected at least one from the group consisting of compounds represented by formula (2), the 3rd component selected at least one from the group consisting of compounds represented by formula (3) and the 4th component selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by formula (4) and formula (5). In the formulas, R<SP>1</SP>is an alkyl group, R<SP>2</SP>is an alkenyl group, R<SP>3</SP>is an alkyl or an alkenyl group, A<SP>1</SP>and A<SP>2</SP>are each independently, for example, 1,4-phenylene, Z<SP>1</SP>, Z<SP>2</SP>and Z<SP>3</SP>are each independently, for example, a single bond and Y<SP>1</SP>and Y<SP>2</SP>are each independently, for example, fluorine.
