PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly safe and naturally occurring antioxidizing substance having an excellent active oxygen scavenging ability.

SOLUTION: It is shown for the first time that citrulline has an active oxygen scavenging ability. A new active oxygen scavenger comprising the citrulline as an active ingredient has the excellent active oxygen scavenging ability and is characterized as being highly safe. Thereby, a therapeutic agent or a prophylactic agent for diseases caused by active oxygen injury and comprising the citrulline as an active ingredient and an antioxidizing food additive comprising the citrulline as the active ingredient are provided. Furthermore, the citrulline has actions of protecting a DNA from the active oxygen injury, and a DNA cleavage preventive agent comprising the citrulline as the active ingredient is provided.
