<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve rubber permeability without lowering the compressive rigidity and to reduce equipment cost or production cost. <P>SOLUTION: A metal cord W for reinforcing a rubber article is obtained by helically winding a metal filament 2 around the outer periphery of a metal filament 1, forming a strand 10 and laying the strand 10 and a metal filament 3. In the cord W, the helically wound metal filament 2 fulfills a role of a spacer to form a moderate interstice S communicating from the inside to the outside between the metal filament 1 or 2 and the metal filament 3. The rubber permeability is enhanced with the interstice. Since the interstice is formed without preforming the filaments into a wavy form and helical rotation by laying is applied to the core filament 1, the compressive rigidity equal to that of a closed cord of a 1×3 twist structure can be ensured.
