PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a configuration of a display image in an image display apparatus for displaying an image by directly projecting light on the retina. SOLUTION: The wavefront curvature of outgoing light from a light source is controlled by a wavefront modulator so that at least a part of the whole image displayed can be displayed as the synthesized image of a plurality of partial images having a mutually different focal position. The light source includes a plurality of emitting parts each emitting a plurality of light beams for the purpose of respectively displaying the plurality of partial images. The wavefront modulator contains a plurality of modulators according to the focus so as to realize each wavefront curvature corresponding to the plurality of focal positions for the plurality of partial images.
