A separator consists of first and second conduits, preferably in the form of first and second cylinders (10, 9), connected by a communicating portion. There is also provided a means to reduce the pressure in the first conduit (10) and a means to reduce the pressure in the second conduit (9), such that the pressure in the first conduit (10) is higher than in the second (9). The separator may be used to separate solid-solid, liquid-solid, and liquid-liquid mixtures. Preferably the communicating portion consists of a filter, or a perforated cylinder (5a). Additionally a venturi (11a) may be provided to raise the pressure inside the first conduit (10). The venturi (11a) may be heated. Both first and second conduits may be provided with diffuser portions (16, 15) that connect directly with centrifugal pumps (18, 19). The pumps (18, 19) may feed to hydro cyclones (51, 52, fig 13), in the case of liquid-liquid separation. In the case of liquid-liquid separation the filter section (5a) may be blocked completely so as to permit direct feed to a hydrocyclone (52). |
