<p>Halopolyaryl esters are prepd. by polycondensing halodiphenols and aromatic acid dichlorides, using catalysts consisting of tertiary amines or amides, and a co-catalyst consisting of 0.001-50 mole % pref. 0.01-5 mole % (based on acid dichloride) Mg or an Mg cpd. or an oxide, chloride or oxychloride of Cu, Zr, Sn, Ti, V, Pb or Fe, in the form of powder, granules or turnings. The co-catalysts considerably increase the velocity of polycondensation, and the reaction time required to produce a polymer with a reduced viscosity of 1-1.8 is reduced from 40-50 hrs to ca. 20 hrs. The polymers have a high thermal stability and are flame resistant and are used in the electrical field. The co-catalyst is pref. an Mg alloy, MgO, MgCl2, CuO, CuCl, ZrCl4, SnCl2, TiCl4, TiO2, VOCl3, PbO, Fe2O3, or an alloy of Cu, Zr, Sn, Ti, V, Pb, or Fe.</p> |
