1467632 Hexahydro-s-triazine derivatives IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 25 April 1974 [8 May 1973] 21827/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] Novel compounds of Formula I wherein the groups R are the same and are CH 3 or C 2 H 5 , R<SP>1</SP> is -CH 2 CH 2 - or -CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 -, and X and Y, which are the same or different, are organic residues, providing that not more than one of X and Y is R 2 N-R<SP>1</SP>-, are obtained by condensing stoichiometric proportions of the compounds of formulµ R 2 NR<SP>1</SP>NH 2 , XNH 2 and YNH 2 with formaldehyde. Preferred tertiary amines of Formula I have the Formula II wherein X<SP>1</SP> represents a divalent optionally substituted hydrocarbon radical (e.g. an alkylene, arylene, -CO- or -CS- radical) and n = 0 or an integer. Examples 1 to 16 prepare mononuclear compounds of Formula I in which R 2 NR<SP>1</SP>- is a 3-dimethylaminopropyl radical and X and Y are R 2 NR<SP>1</SP>- or n-C 4 H 9 , -CH 2 CH 2 OH, or -CH 2 CH 2 NH 2 . Polynuclear compounds of Formula II are also prepared wherein n is 0, 1 or 2, and X<SP>1</SP> is -(CH 2 ) 6 - or -CO-. The tertiary amines of Formulµ I and II are used as catalysts for the trimerization of organic isocyanates and for the condensation of organic polyisocyanates with polyols to form polyurethanes.
