The system has a ramark (4) for transmitting directional signals (4a, 4b) and to equip a traffic lane (3). The signals indicate a value representative of the speed limit not to exceed on a zone of the lane. The ramark has directional transmitting antennas (8a, 8b), respectively transmitting the directional signals (4a, 4b) in respective traffic directions on the lane, to define different geographical traffic areas. An independent claim is also included for a method for limiting the speed of a motor vehicle.
