<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high performance multilevel converter which has many output voltage levels and a low high-frequency voltage with the number of devices fewer than a conventional one, thereby preventing the device from being damaged by an excessive voltage and simplifying the control of the multilevel converter by avoiding loss concentrated on a specified device without using a specified means. <P>SOLUTION: First to third capacitors C1 to C3 are sequentially connected in series between the positive electrode and the negative electrode of a DC power source, a controllable device and a diode are connected inversely parallel with each other to constitute a reverse conduction switch, and first to fourth reverse conduction switches Q1 to Q4 are sequentially connected in series between the positive electrode and the negative electrode.
