<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller for an internal combustion engine capable of simply and securely discharging and reducing NOx stored by NOx catalyst while realizing low fuel economy. <P>SOLUTION: This controller for the internal combustion engine is provided with oxidation catalyst 26 for promoting oxidation of a component in exhaust gas and NOx catalyst 29 for storing NOx when NOx exists in flowing-in exhaust gas and discharging and reducing stored NOx when reducing agent exists in flowing-in exhaust gas sequentially in an exhaust passage. When discharging NOx from the NOx catalyst, operation of the internal combustion engine is stopped to reduce temperature of exhaust gas in the exhaust passage on the upstream side of oxidation catalyst below predetermined temperature and then restart the internal combustion engine. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
