PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that the quality of a formed image is deteriorated because a position of a recording medium cannot be accurately detected, when the recording medium exceeding a size predicted according to information on the size of the recording medium is carried, or when the recording medium of the prediected size is carried in the state of being displaced to a carriage side. SOLUTION: When a carriage 3 is moved to a scan starting position which is determined according to the recording medium 12A predicted from size data, a density detection signal from a density sensor 14 is checked, and it is determined whether or not the density sensor 14 detects the recording medium 12. When the density sensor 14 detects the recording medium 12, the scan starting position, which is determined according to the predicted size of the recording medium 12A, is corrected to an outside with respect to a left end position of the recording medium of the largest conveyable size.
