PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical semiconductor device which can make its package size small and can improve its frequency characteristic. SOLUTION: The optical semiconductor device has a light receiving element 3 mounted on a stem 1 with a submount 2 disposed therebetween, and a circuit element 4 such as a preamplifier mounted on the stem with a second submount 7 disposed therebetween to be connected to the light receiving element 3. The first and second submounts 2 and 7 are arranged so that the element mounted surface or surfaces of one or both of the submounts form a predetermined angle to the stem 1 or form a right angle thereto.
