PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transparent original document transfer apparatus for preventing the paper jam of an original document caused by discharging a transparent original document while an insertion port cover is in a closed state, and an image reading apparatus provided with the same. SOLUTION: This transparent original document transfer apparatus is an apparatus for transferring a transparent original document to an original document reading region of the image reading apparatus. The apparatus is provided with an insertion port for receiving a transparent original document to be inserted; an operation unit for receiving an instruction for discharging the original document; a transfer unit for transferring the transparent original document inserted from the insertion port to the original document reading region, and discharging the original document upon receiving the instruction in the operation unit; and an insertion port cover capable of moving between a closed posture for closing the insertion port and an opened posture for opening it, and covering the operation unit to make it inoperable when taking the closed posture and opening the operation unit to make it operable when taking the open posture.
