PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tool position detector capable of detecting the reference position of a machining tool always accurately with simple constitution while avoiding the occurrence of breakage or the like even in the case of using an extremely fine machining tool and causing no problem of malfunction, a contact service life, or the like. SOLUTION: A sliding body 7 is projected and held slidably in a state of being energized toward the outside of a body 6 with respect to the body 6 installed on a base 3 of a machine tool or the like. A light emitting element 12 and a light receiving element 13 are opposedly arranged with a predetermined space in the body 6. A blade 26 interposed between both elements 12, 13 to transmit/intercept light is fixed to the sliding body 7 to constitute a photoelectric switch 28 for detecting the contact of the machining tool 2 with the sliding body 7.
