PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical type continuous casting apparatus with which in the case of continuously casting molten metal with the vertical type continuous casting apparatus, the development of leakage of the molten metal according to remelting of solidified shell at the lower part of a water-cooling mold can easily be detected. SOLUTION: In the vertical type continuous casting apparatus for continuously drawing out a cast block from a bottom part in the water-cooling mold which opens the bottom part and forms a water chamber in the inner part and has a cooling-water spouting hole at the lower part, a hollow member composed of a material having lower melting point than the cast metal adjusted with the drawn-out cast block, for example, a rubber type is set under pressurizing state, and when the hollow member is melted by bringing into contact with the leaked metal, the development of the leakage of the molten metal at the lower part of the water-cooling mold is detected by detecting the rapid pressure drop in the hollow member with a pressure-meter.
